Sketching Our Built Environment

The class will explore basic drawing techniques with a final introduction to Line and Wash watercolor painting

  • Class #1: Tools and Techniques Of The Craft: “What’s My Line?”

  • Class #2: Light, Shade, and Shadow, Compositions: “Is It Too Late?”

  • Class #3: Learning To Look, Perspective: “Reducing Reality To 1 Page”

  • Class #4: Intro To Line and Wash, Three Steps To A Watercolor Painting

The class will approach all subjects with equal interest and explore architectural themes and work from photos. The historical buildings of Sandpoint will be of special interest.

About Barry Burgess

Barry was fortunate to receive a formal art education at The Art Institute of Chicago at a very young age. He navigated his artistic interests through years of sketching, painting, and sculpting and developed a talent that leaddirectly into architecture. Later in life he moved his family to the Inland. Northwest. He began a professional career that led him to Seattle. Now retired, he has returned to Sandpoint and enjoys his time exploring the outdoors, making art, and sharing his skill along the way.

Pencils:

  • Standard #2 household pencil

  • 1 Extra black, “General’s” Layout

  • 1 Black Charcoal

  • 1 White Charcoal

  • 1 Household Eraser

Pens:

  • 1 Twin Tip Sharpie (Fine and Extra Fine Tips) each end

Paper:

  • 1 ‘All Media’ Sketching Paper 9 x 12 Min.

  • 1 Tablet Or Single Use, 140 lb Cold Press Watercolor Paper

Watercolors:

  • Minimal 8 Color (washable child’s tray not acceptable)

Brushes:

  • Minimal 3 Standard: Soft Tip (detail), 1/2” Mid-Sized Bevel Tip,

  • Larger: 3/4” Straight Edge Fine Hair
