In this class students will create a wall hanging that is brimming with texture and movement. They will learn weaving techniques that will allow them to create three dimensional effects in their weaving. They will also learn how the use of color can have a profound effect on their weaving projects.
Kimekomi with Jenni Barry

Kimekomi is a Japanese art form where fabric pieces are tucked into a base. In this class students will be creating 2-D Kimekomi art that combines the painterly quality of impressionism, with complex quilting. We will begin by drawing a ‘stained-glass’ style design on foam-core. We cover basic cutting techniques for the foam, then cutting and tucking techniques for the fabric.

In this class students will learn shop safety, proper use/care of tools and processes/ techniques with demonstration. They will be using the Oxyacetylene torch and welding rod to create 3- dimensional art. The first half of the class will be practicing shaping metal with the torch as well as welding pieces together. In the second portion of the class students will create a sculpture that they will be able to take home.

In the first class, students will be working with steel using fire, anvil, various hammers, and a few power tools. They will learn how to work with hot metal through the processes of forging, twisting, and shaping into form.
In the second day, students will form copper with hammers on a wood block, heating to anneal and hammering to work harden the copper. They will learn melding metal and copper though the process of brazing in putting together their ladle. They will finish off the class by cleaning and sealing steel handle in beeswax.

Glass Chimes made from Recycled Materials with Julie Ellis
