The Art of Inner Expression: Session 3

BASIC MINDFUL ART MAKING PRACTICES

When incorporating mindfulness into art, artists can utilize masking and stenciling techniques to create intricate images and patterns. Instead of aiming for a perfect outcome, they focus on the tactile experience, paying attention to the feel of the stencil against the surface and the steady rhythm of applying paint or medium through the openings. Similarly, texturing with found objects becomes a grounding practice as artists mindfully experiment with natural elements. By using items like leaves, stones, or bark, they can focus on the unique impressions and organic patterns they produce, appreciating the small details and textures of each object. This approach enables the creation of diverse, unique patterns and impressions—not through rigid control, but through a curious, non-judgmental process that calms the mind and fosters a profound connection to the materials.

  • Week 1 - Texture: Exploring actual and implied texture and its role in adding tactile interest to a design.

  • Week 2 - Space: Understanding positive and negative space, and how to create the illusion of depth and dimension on a 2D surface.

  • Week 3 - Rhythm and Movement: Creating a sense of visual flow and action within the design through repetition and pattern

Attending the Inner Art of Expression Sessions 1 and 2 before this class is highly recommended.
