Getting Started with Oil and Cold Wax
This class introduces the basics of working with oil paint mixed with cold wax medium. It is designed to give students the knowledge and skills they will need to produce unique and interesting paintings. It will also provide a great foundation for students who are interested in advancing their skills further by taking the March oil and cold wax class offered at the Joyce Dillon Studio.
In this class we will cover:
• What Is Cold Wax?
• Basic Materials, Tools & Supplies
• Mixing Cold Wax with Oil Paint
• Basic Painting Techniques
• Mark-making & Adding Layers
• Drying Time
• Clean Up Details
During class time, students will have an opportunity to create paintings using brayers, squeegees, and palette knives. They will learn how to create depth and transparency by working in multiple layers. They will learn how to create texture by using a variety of reductive and additive techniques. By the end of the class, each student will have completed a series of several small, finished paintings to take home and enjoy.
NOTE: The instruction provided in this class will be demonstrated in abstract paintings, but students can adapt the techniques to whatever subject matter and/or degree of abstraction that they choose.
About jan rust
Jan loved creating artwork from the time she was a child. She received a BA degree in art and education in 1970. Between 1970-1985 she taught art to students ages 5-adult. She worked in schools and studios in Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Washington.
Between 1985-2010, Jan was busy raising a family and working as an educator. Although she never lost interest in her artistic pursuits, time was filled with a busy family and a busy job.
In 2010, Jan retired, moved to Sandpoint, and focused her attention back to creating art. Her current passions are oil and cold wax painting and creating textured, sculptural weavings. She loves spending her time at POAC and she is having a great time in the Joyce Dillon Studio.
