Beginning Portrait Drawing

This introductory portrait drawing class guides students through the fundamentals of drawing realistic human portraits. Using one of your favorite photographs, you’ll learn how to observe facial proportions, and capture expression and likeness, with simple, accessible techniques. Each session includes step‑by‑step demonstrations, guided practice, and personalized feedback. No prior drawing experience is required, just curiosity and a willingness to explore your creative side!

About bill mather

Bill Mather is an internationally recognized, award‑winning painter, illustrator, matte artist, and art instructor. He is a recent and enthusiastic addition to the Sandpoint art community, grateful to be living close to his kids and grandkids and already well‑known as the Camp Host at the Bonner County Fairgrounds RV Park.

He studied illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, where he later taught figure drawing. His professional background includes work on movies and commercials, along with numerous portrait commissions, including celebrity likenesses. His artistic achievements have been recognized at the highest level, earning him an Emmy Award in 1989 and an Oscar for Forrest Gump in 1995.

Before moving to Idaho, he also curated and ran a figure‑drawing group in Los Angeles for three years, creating a supportive space for artists to practice and grow. With this blend of professional experience, teaching skill, and genuine community spirit, he offers beginners a friendly and inspiring introduction to portrait drawing.

Supply list

  • Any kind of good white paper, but preferably a sketch pad of at least 9x12 inches.

  • A clear photograph of the person (or pet) that you would like to draw, the larger the better.

  • A duplicate photograph of the same photo, as we will be drawing a grid on it.

Supply fee

All addition materials will be provided for a $6.00 supply fee. It will be due to the instructor at the first class session. (Please bring cash.)
