Art Talk #6

American Indigenous Voices in Art

The final Talk of this series will spotlight Native American art. Their art offers a unique world of American experience that is yet to be fully embraced by broad audiences. The Plateau Indians, who have inhabited our region for an impressive 12,000 years, are revered for their ingenuity, adaptability, and profound connection to their environment and each other. Their indigenous stories, art, and social structures provide invaluable insights into the rich and complex history of the Salish tribes, including the Coeur d'Alene. Like female and Black art, Native artists deeply understand influential American art styles that they use to express their distinctive cultural backgrounds, traditions, and experiences. As the original inhabitants of this land, these artists powerfully convey and contribute profound insights through their cultural symbols, narratives, and values rooted in their heritage to all audiences. By blending realism, expressionism, abstract expressionism, and pop influences with the revival and reconstruction of the skills, symbolism, and traditions that originate from and are passed down through their ancient ancestry, our Native peoples have much to share. Engaging with their works enriches our contemporary American dialogue and underscores the validity of their artful voices.
