Art Talk #2

Visual Voice, A Cross-Culture Language for Understanding Art

A significant aspect of appreciating, discussing, and critiquing artworks is being familiar with the terms used to describe and analyze all works of art. This language is a universal tool connecting us to a global community of art enthusiasts, allowing us to explore how the artist arranges, orchestrates, and utilizes it. Just as spoken language comprises phonemes, syntax, and semantics, visual art is grounded in elements and principles that, when combined, create works that communicate ideas and meaning to the viewer. This language helps the artist skillfully express their meaning and intention. It enables the viewer to consider the impact of an artwork not only in terms of personal preference but also regarding whether it feels unfamiliar or challenging. There is art that one likes, dislikes, or feels neutral about, but there is no such thing as bad art when the language of art is employed.
